Classical music is a broad term that refers to music rooted from the traditions of Western liturgical and secular music. The term “classical music” appeared in the early 19th century, describing classical music as anything that “lasts a long time.”

There are certain characteristics that classical music contains that generally few or no other genres of music contain, they are often distinguished by their choice of instruments. Classical composers often create their music with a very complex relationship between its affective content and the intellectual means by which it is achieved as it generally requires high musical skills to play and ability to coordinate with other players.

Few bands were able to surpass the greatness of Queen. Embracing the exaggerated pomp of rock and heavy metal, the British quartet created a huge, mock-operatic sound with layered guitars and overdubbed vocals. Queen’s music boasted the motto that “no synthesizers were used on this record,” as vocalist Freddie Mercury directed the group toward pseudo-classical arrangements as epitomized on their best-known song, “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

Mercury, was a flamboyant bisexual who managed to keep his sexuality in the closet until his death from AIDS in 1991. His sexuality was never a hindrance throughout Queen’s music, that would have been impossible without Mercury, one of the most dynamic and charismatic frontmen in rock history.

After the death of Freddie Mercury, the remaining members of Queen held a memorial concert at Wembley Stadium to raise money for the Mercury Phoenix Trust, a foundation advocating for AIDS awareness. Guest artists such as David Bowie, Elton John, Annie Lennox, Def Leppard, and Guns N’ Roses, paid tribute to Queen’s vocalist who have made a name in the rock music industry.

Tradition can be preserved even through music that can be heard by the present and future generations. From the historical perspective, traditional music or better known as folk music had its uniqueness and distinction from other type of music.

This is transmitted through an Oral tradition which describes the past and links it to the present times. The music is often related to national culture that commemorates historical and personal events. The only thing is that, it lacks the copyright on songs and fusion of cultures brought about by waves of migration that resulted to a new breed of society.

Ethnic music describe the ways in which music expresses historical differences and constructs identities in a modern, urban society. It preserves culture, language, customs, social and family interaction from the past. Ethnic music assumes different forms that stretches across stylistic boundaries between folk, religious, and classical musics.

Ethnic music connects people to a selected component of its past but gives meaning to the present. Thus, ethnic music should be understood as changing and not static for through music, one can revisit his/her past. We can look at the ways in which ethnic musics have shaped people and continue to do so in transforming, but by no means eliminating, the ethnic origin shaped by generations.
